Get out those gardening gloves, it’s time to weed out old botany titles!
(We know it's corny, but we just couldn't resist....)
Plants and plant communities play an important role in our environment. The oxygen in the air we breathe comes from the photosynthesis of plants. Streams and lakes benefit from healthy plant cover. Plant life impacts our climate, fights erosion, and provides important habitats for animal life. Plants provide fibers for clothes and industrial products. Plants provide a large portion of our food supply. Some plants are sources of healing and others are deadly poisonous. Some plants are stunningly beautiful and others are seemingly plain. Explore the fascinating world of plants and plant communities. Update your collection with these Heinemann-Raintree titles!

Criteria for Weeding Plant (Botany) Titles
- Check the 580s.
- Many botany titles remain useful for a longer period of time than other subject areas. Check all titles that are 15 years older or more. If the title includes misleading information, weed and replace with an appropriate, up-to-date selection.
- As scientific knowledge improves and expands, add fresh titles that address advances in the field.
- Be sure that material related to scientific classification is correct and current.
- All titles should embrace and encourage appropriate safety methods.
- Weed materials that rarely circulate using the circulation statistics. However, be careful not to dispose of titles that contain valuable material. An item's circulation history is not always an accurate measure of the item's use. Students may use these titles to glean specific slices of information rather than as take-home reads.
- Although you may be able to save much of the collection, be sure holdings include titles that incorporate modern design elements.
- Titles should be free of gender and racial stereotypes.
- Weed materials that are worn, checking for:
- Soiled pages
- Brittle, yellowed paper
- Missing pages
- Worn edges or corners
- Broken spine
- Dirty cover

Consider Weeding Titles Like:
* This range requires unique consideration. As previously stated, a botany title’s copyright date may not signal an immediate need for replacement and disposal. Take note of and evaluate each title according to the aforementioned guidelines.
