Why Weed Art History and Appreciation Titles?

Many students love art class where they get their hands dirty creating fun and interesting pieces of art.  Taking the experience a step further, Art History and Appreciation can only deepen a student's enjoyment of fine art.  The eccentric lives of famous artists, the story behind computer animation and the mystery of ancient cave paintings are just some of the topics touched on in this subject area.

Criteria for Weeding Art History and Appreciation Titles

  • Check the 700s (especially the 710s) and the biographies section.
  • Weed materials that are worn, checking for:
    • Soiled pages
    • Brittle, yellowed paper
    • Missing pages
    • Worn edges or corners
    • Broken spine
    • Dirty cover
  • Weed materials that rarely circulate using the circulation statistics.  However, be careful not to dispose of titles that contain valuable material.  An item's circulation history is not always an accurate measure of the item's use.  Students may use these titles to glean specific slices of information rather than as take-home reads.
  • It’s always wise to see if a more recent edition of a title has been published – especially with more comprehensive titles.
  • When choosing new titles, consider the following collection guidelines.  Titles should:
    • provide a wide range of current subject matter and be free of gender and ethnic stereotypes.
    • cover an array of interesting, important and popular art styles such as graphic novels, animation and computer game graphics.
    • include art from around the globe as well as a broad spectrum of historical periods.
    • touch on a variety of mediums such as sculpture, painting, drawing, photography, etc.
    • cover a broad range of art movements – i.e. Impressionism, Surrealism, Cubism.
    • include engaging graphics – especially colorful, high-quality photographs that allow the reader to get a good sense of the original piece of art.
  • Remember to double check that titles span a variety of reading levels including High Interest/Low Readability choices for the struggling reader.
