Why Weed Mammal Titles?
Lions and tigers and bears – oh my! Whether cuddly or scary, mammoth or tiny, furry or smooth, most kids like reading about mammals and their habitats. The mammal section of your collection is probably a high-traffic area since these books are used for reference work and homework but also recreational reading.
Considering the vast array of animals that fall into the mammal classification, it's important to keep on top of weeding from and adding to this area of your collection. The size of mammal sections can make development seem unwieldy, so you might want to tackle your collection one animal at a time or weed your patrons' favorite animals first.

Criteria for Weeding Mammal Titles
- Check the 590s — especially the 599s.
- Weed materials that are worn, checking for:
- Soiled pages
- Brittle, yellowed paper
- Missing pages
- Worn edges or corners
- Broken spine
- Dirty cover
- Weed materials that rarely circulate using the circulation statistics. However, be careful not to dispose of titles that contain valuable material. An item's circulation history is not always an accurate measure of the item's use. Students may use these titles to glean specific slices of information rather than as take-home reads.
- When choosing new titles, consider the following collection guidelines. Titles should:
- provide a wide range of current subject matter and be free of gender and ethnic stereotypes.
- cover an array of interesting, important and popular mammals — don’t forget those whales!
- include mammals from around the globe.
- include mammals in danger of becoming extinct.
- feature engaging graphics – especially colorful, high-quality photographs that allow the reader to get a good sense of the mammal and its habitat.
- Remember to double check that titles span a variety of reading levels including High Interest/Low Readability choices for the struggling reader.
- Include survey titles that cover a broad sampling of mammals as well as animal-specific titles.
