Why Weed Ancient Civilization Titles?

The past generally informs the present – even the ancient past.  From Roman baths to Greek theatre to the architectural miracle of the Egyptians, ancient civilizations are a great place to learn about history, math, science and the arts.  Gladiators, mummies, and interesting cuisine (hedgehog, anyone?) also make many Ancient Civilization topics appealing recreational reading.  Update your collection with these Heinemann-Raintree titles!

Criteria for Weeding Ancient Civilization Titles

  • Check 932-939.
  • Weed materials that are worn, checking for:
    • Soiled pages
    • Brittle, yellowed paper
    • Missing pages
    • Worn edges or corners
    • Broken spine
    • Dirty cover
  • Weed materials that rarely circulate using the circulation statistics.  However, be careful not to dispose of titles that contain valuable material.  An item's circulation history is not always an accurate measure of the item's use.  Students may use these titles to glean specific slices of information rather than as take-home reads.
  • Double-check that titles span a variety of reading levels including High Interest/Low Readability choices for the struggling reader.
  • When choosing new titles, consider the following collection guidelines:
    • Does the title provide a wide range of current subject matter and is free of gender and ethnic stereotypes?
    • Does the title feature engaging graphics – especially colorful, high-quality photographs, charts, diagrams, and other visuals?
    • Does the title include current research?
    • Does the overall collection span a wide range of years and cultures?
