Criteria for Weeding Colonial and Revolutionary America Titles
- Check the 970s and biography section of your collection.
- Weed materials that are worn, checking for:
- Soiled pages
- Brittle, yellowed paper
- Missing pages
- Worn edges or corners
- Broken spine
- Dirty cover
- Weed materials that rarely circulate using the circulation statistics. However, be careful not to dispose of titles that contain valuable material. An item's circulation history is not always an accurate measure of the item's use. Students may use these titles to glean specific slices of information rather than as take-home reads.
- Double-check that titles span a variety of reading levels including High Interest/Low Readability choices for the struggling reader.
- When choosing new titles, consider the following collection guidelines:
- Does the title provide a wide range of current subject matter and is free of gender and ethnic stereotypes?
- Does the title feature engaging graphics – especially colorful, high-quality photographs, charts, diagrams, and other visuals?
- Does the title include current research including primary sources?
- Does the overall collection include a variety of subjects and perspectives?
(battles, soldiers, home front, everyday life, beliefs and practices, etc.)
